Gauge-to-Dimensions Calculator

Enter your gauge from your swatch, then choose what you need: type in the stitches and rows you have worked (or plan to work) to get the width and length, or type in the width and length you want to get the number of stitches and rows. Fill in just one of them if that's all you need.

Swatching tips

Results are rounded to 0.5 cm and 0.25" increments when calculating a size, and to whole stitches and rows when calculating a number.

If your project is worked in the round, make your swatch in the round. If it is worked flat, work it flat. If the project is worked both in the round and flat, swatch both ways, as the gauge may differ. Going up or down a needle size usually helps to get the same gauge.

Please always measure your gauge on a blocked swatch.

It is also helpful to measure your gauge before blocking, so you know how much it changes. For example, if your pre-blocking row gauge is 32 rounds per 10 cm / 4" and you work 36 rounds, you will end up with about 11.5 cm / 4.5" of length after blocking.

For the most accurate swatch ever, work it over 15 to 20 cm / 6 to 8" and carry it in your bag or pocket for a few days. That simulates the wear of the finished garment, which is especially beneficial for yarns that stretch a lot, like cotton or alpaca.
