Meander Vest is a tank top-like vest with a cable pattern suitable for many styles and situations. It is a simple garment yet the meander pattern and many details make it a very interesting piece.

The vest is also fun to knit. I believe that whoever might knit this vest will learn a new technique or two and thoroughly enjoy the process of making it.

YARN

You need 2 (2, 3, 3, 3), [3, 4, 4, 4] skeins of Gilliat from DeRerum Natura (185 m/50 g; woolen spun, French mérinos d'Arles and black Portuguese merino) or 438 (487, 550, 599, 666), [716, 779, 831, 905) m / 479 (532.5, 601.5, 655, 728.5), [783, 852, 909, 990] yds of a similar yarn. Does not include yarn needed for swatching. (see the information in the box below).

The sample is knitted with Gilliat from DeRerum Natura in the colourway Poivre.
I recommend using a worsted weight yarn (preferably non-superwash and woolen spun) for this project. Alternatively, consider combining a lace-weight yarn like mohair with a sport or DK weight yarn. However, keep in mind that mohair’s fuzziness can overpower the cable pattern.
Please be aware that adjusting the length of the garment or the needle size you need to achieve the stated gauge will also affect the amount of yarn needed to finish the project.

NEEDLES

4.5 mm / US 7 circular needles with a cable of at least 80 cm / 32"

Another circular needle with a narrower tip than the main needle (cable length is not important)

GAUGE

18 sts & 26 rows = 10 cm / 4" in stockinette stitch worked both flat and in the round, after washing and blocking.

Please note that for this pattern both stitch gauge and round/row gauge is important. Your round gauge should therefore fall between
25 and 27 rounds/rows.

NOTIONS

  • stitch markers
  • one circular needle smaller than the one used for the vest
  • waste yarn/stitch holder
  • tapestry needle
  • blocking tools

ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION

The vest is started at the back neck, where you work short rows for a bit of neck shaping. Then the left front is worked and you also cast on stitches for  thedouble-knitted edge. Once the left front is finished you work the double-knitted edge across the back of the vest, connecting it to the right shoulder, and then the right front is worked. Next, the left and right fronts are joined together and increases for the underarm are worked. Then you knit the back, increasing into the underarm. Next, the front and back are joined and you work in the round until you finish the body of the vest. Then the front and the back are separated again and a dramatic ribbed split-hem is worked. The final step is to graft the ends of the double-knitted edges together.

The length of the body can easily be modified to suit your own preferences.
