YARN
You need 2 (2, 2) skeins of Ulysse from DeRerum Natura (185 m/50 g; woolen spun, French mérinos d'Arles and black Portuguese merino) or approx. 240 (255, 275, 285) m/ 260 (280, 300, 310) yds of a similar yarn.
The sample is knitted with Ulysse from DeRerum Natura in the colourway Genet. Please be aware that adjusting the length of the garment or the needle size you need to achieve the stated gauge will also affect the amount of yarn needed to finish the project. |
NEEDLES
Size XS & L: 3.25 mm / US 3 needle tips on a circular cable needle.
Size S only: 3.5 mm / US 4 needle tips on a circular cable needle.
Size M only: 3 mm / US 2.5 needle tips on a circular cable needle.
Optional: One size bigger needle tips for the I-cord brim.
GAUGE
Sizes XS & L: 26 sts and 40 rows = 10 cm / 4" over cable pattern (chart A and B), after washing and blocking
Size S only: 25 sts and 38 rows = 10 cm / 4" over cable pattern (chart A and B), after washing and blocking
Size M only: 27 sts and 42 rows = 10 cm / 4" over cable pattern (chart A and B), after washing and blocking
See the directions for knitting the swatch below. Please, also note that the cable pattern is quite stretchy so you can get a different gauge based on how much you stretch your swatch. It is important to get no more than 26 (25, 27, 26) stitches per repeat when you stretch it as much as you can. This way you can be sure the hat will fit because you will be able to stretch it to the measurements. I recommend stretching it to the point where you like how the cables look and then measuring the stitch count. |
NOTIONS
- stitch markers
- tapestry needle
- blocking tools
- an extra circular needle, DPNs, or a stitch holder for winding cast-on
ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION
The hat is knitted in the round and starts with a provisional cast-on. First, you knit the body (charts A and B) and then you start to shape the crown and finish it by pulling the yarn tail through the final few stitches. The last step is the I-cord brim. You pick up stitches from the provisional cast-on, cast on 7 I-cord stitches using the winding cast-on method and work the I-cord brim around the whole hat. Finally, you finish the brim by grafting it together.
